What is clarity?

Clarity is the quality of writing that lets a reader extract the intended meaning on a single pass, without guesswork or rereading. A clear sentence names who is doing what to whom, uses concrete words over abstract ones and avoids the traps of passive voice, nominalization and vague qualifiers. Clarity is a choice, not a talent: every draft can be made clearer by rewriting the sentences that make the reader hesitate.

Why does clarity matter?

Unclear writing costs the reader attention and the brand trust, because every ambiguous sentence is another moment the reader has to work. Unclear copy fails to convert in marketing, creates support tickets in product and breeds misalignment across teams. The risk of oversimplifying is stripping meaningful distinctions, but this is far rarer than the risk of writing something that sounds substantial and means almost nothing. Clarity is the shortest path between what the writer meant and what the reader understands.

How do you use clarity?

  1. Read every sentence aloud and mark any place you stumble, since the stumbles almost always point to the unclear phrase.

  2. Replace abstract nouns with concrete verbs and name the actor in every sentence that describes an action.
