What is target audience?

Target audience is the specific group of people your writing is meant to reach, defined by their role, context, goals and the language they use rather than by broad demographics. A narrow target audience gives every brand voice decision a clear test: would this reader actually care about this word choice, this level of detail, this example? The best target audience descriptions are specific enough that someone outside your company can imagine a real reader sitting in front of the page.

Why does target audience matter?

Writing for everyone means writing for no one, so the voice becomes generic and the content fails to resonate with any reader in particular. A sharp target audience lets you pick words the audience already uses, reference problems they actually have and skip the setup explanations they already know. The risk is narrowing too far and leaving adjacent readers confused, which is why most brands define a primary target with one or two adjacent segments.
