What is microcopy?

Microcopy is the small bits of text scattered throughout a product or site, including button labels, error messages, empty states, tooltips and form hints. Each piece is short, often a single line, but together they carry the brand voice across every click, tap and touchpoint. Good microcopy disappears into the experience when everything is going well and shines when something breaks, guiding the user toward the next step without blame or confusion.

Error: That link seems broken.

Success: All set. A receipt is on the way.

Empty state: Nothing here yet. Add your first entry.

Why does microcopy matter?

Readers experience microcopy more often than any other brand writing, which makes it one of the highest-leverage surfaces for voice consistency. Bland or system-generated microcopy breaks the spell of a carefully crafted brand, signaling that the team cared about the homepage but not the 404 page. The risk is cute microcopy that distracts users at a moment when they need help, so the best microcopy is clear first and characterful second. Done well, it is one of the strongest tools for making a product feel made with care.

How do you use microcopy?

  1. Audit every piece of in-product text including error states, empty states, confirmation messages and buttons for voice consistency.

  2. Rewrite system-default strings such as "Something went wrong" with copy that matches your brand voice while staying clear about what to do next.

  3. Bring microcopy rules into your Brivvy brand voice so every AI tool generating new UI strings starts from the right voice defaults.
