What is call to action?
A call to action is a short phrase that tells a reader what to do next, typically on a button, link or final sentence. The best calls to action are two to five words, lead with a strong verb and name a specific outcome rather than a generic action. Every content surface has at least one implicit call to action, and the difference between a good and bad one often comes down to whether the reader understands exactly what will happen when they act.

Why does call to action matter?
Most content exists to get a reader to do something, and the call to action is the single sentence that decides whether they do. Vague calls to action force the reader to guess at the next step, which pushes them to bounce rather than convert. The risk of overly aggressive calls is breaking trust by overpromising, so the balance is being specific about the action and honest about the outcome. A strong call to action turns intent into behavior without friction.
How do you use call to action?
Lead with an action verb that describes what the reader will do, such as "start," "download," "claim" or "see."
Name the specific outcome or benefit in the remaining words, so the reader understands what happens after they act.
Test call-to-action phrasing against your brand voice so it fits alongside the rest of the content rather than sounding like a stock template.
